SignificanceRebirth of Lord Ganesha

What Is Ganesh Chaturthi?

Ganesh Chaturthi, also called Vinayaka Chaturthi or Ganeshotsav, is a big ten-day festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesh, the wise and prosperous Hindu deity. Each year, this festival sparkles with joy in either August or September, bringing communities together in unique ways.

Why Is Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrated? | Ganesh Chaturthi Story

Ganesh Chaturthi is a beautiful celebration dedicated to honouring Lord Ganesha. He’s the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. One day, when Ganesha was a child, he was guarding his mother while she bathed. She had told him not to let anyone in. Ganesha obeyed, and this led to a clash of wills. Lord Shiva, unaware of Ganesha’s identity, sought to enter. But Ganesha, dutiful and steadfast, blocked his way. In a moment of anger, Lord Shiva severed Ganesha’s head. Upon seeing her son lifeless, Goddess Parvati was heartbroken and threatened to unleash chaos upon the universe unless Ganesha was revived.

Moved by this grief, Lord Brahma stepped in and affixed the head of an elephant onto Ganesha’s body, bringing him back to life. This divine transformation gave rise to Lord Ganesha, the deity with the elephant head. Ganesh Chaturthi, therefore, is a joyous occasion to celebrate the rebirth of Lord Ganesha, to express our deep devotion, and to seek his blessings in overcoming life’s hurdles.

Interestingly, this festival also played a role in India’s fight for freedom. Lokmanya Tilak, a prominent freedom fighter, encouraged these celebrations to unite people and plan strategies against British rule. It’s a festival that blends tradition, devotion, and a dash of history.

Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations | How Is It Celebrated?

Ganesh Chaturthi is a 10-day fiesta full of colours and devotion. Here’s a peek into what these ten days hold:

Day 1 – Welcoming Lord Ganesha with Prayers and Clay Idols: The festival starts with setting up Lord Ganesha’s idol at home or in public pandals (temporary structures) and offering prayers.

Day 2 – The Main Day of the Festival: The second day is known as “Chaturthi” and is considered to be the most important day of the festival.

Day 3 – Special Prayers and Aarti for Lord Ganesha: On this day, devotees offer extra-special prayers and do aarti, a Hindu ritual to show their love for Lord Ganesha.

Day 4 – Celebrating with Prayers, Aarti, and Sweets: The day is celebrated with special prayers, aarti, and offerings of sweets to Lord Ganesha.

Day 5 – Worshiping Lord Ganesha with Shhodashopachara Pooja: On the fifth day, devotees perform “Shhodashopachara Pooja” (16 forms of worship) and offer special prayers to Lord Ganesha.

Day 6 – Celebrating with Prayers and Aartis at Homes: The sixth day is called “Sashti,” and is celebrated with special prayers and aartis at our homes.

Day 7 – Offering Special Prayers and Saptapadi to Lord Ganesha: On the seventh day, devotees perform “Saptapadi” (seven steps) and offer special prayers to Lord Ganesha.

Day 8 – Ashtami: The eighth day is known as “Ashtami” and is celebrated with special prayers, aarti, and offerings of sweets to Lord Ganesha.

Day 9 – Worship of Nine Plants: On the ninth day, devotees perform “Navapatrika Pooja” (worship of nine plants).

Day 10 – Grand Procession and Ganesh Visarjan: The last day, “Vijayadashami,” marks the end of the festival. We take Lord Ganesha’s idol in a big procession and immerse it in water nearby. This is called “Ganesh Visarjan.”

Ganesh Chaturthi 2024 Visarjan Date

During Ganesh Chaturthi, families and communities warmly welcome Lord Ganesha into their homes. They cherish his presence for 10 wonderful days, treating him like a cherished guest. But just as any good host bids farewell to a dear friend, they too say goodbye to Lord Ganesha, sending him off to his heavenly abode in Kailash.

This heartfelt farewell is called “Visarjan,” and it’s a touching ceremony where Ganesha’s idol is gently immersed in water. This farewell usually takes place on the 10th day, known as “Ananth Chaturdashi.” It’s like a grand send-off celebration that marks the end of Ganesh Utsav. This Year, Ganesh Visarjan 2024 will fall on Friday, September 6, 2024.

Tip – To celebrate Navratri 2024 in Australia, mark the dates of the festival, and participate in local community events or temple gatherings.

Note – Ganesh Chaturthi is known for its ten days of merriment, but here’s the twist – the farewell day isn’t set in stone. You have options! You can keep Lord Ganesha as your special guest for 3, 5, 7 days, or go all the way to the full 10 days.
