History of Marina Beach | Marina Beach Chennai Facts
Areas near the coast often flooded before the 16th century due to rising sea levels. When the sea disappeared, a number of peaks and lagoons were left behind. One such sand ridge ran from the mouth of the Cooum River to the Presidency College’s present site, which is situated on Fort St. George’s southern side. Later, on the opposite side of the slope, on an extensive dip, the college grounds were constructed. The crest is where the beach is now.
Sir Mountstuart Grant Duff, the Governor of Madras from 1881 to 1886, was fascinated with the beautiful beach and built a promenade along the shore that became public in 1884. It was known as the Madras Marina and had layers of fine sand.
The Marina Beach Chennai existed as a gathering place for the freedom fighters before independence. In 1909, Marina Beach saw the construction of India’s first aquarium and monuments honouring Mahatma Gandhi. This aquarium in Chennai Marina Beach is worth every visit!
